Most locksmiths think of a house as a front door and a back door. In Pensacola the property does not stop there. There is the driveway gate on Scenic Highway, the pool enclosure in Cordova Park, the workshop behind a Warrington bungalow, the dock box on Bayou Texar, and the side door into a garage that nobody remembers locking. We secure the whole footprint, not just the two doors on the house.

Walk the edge of a Pensacola property and count the openings. A driveway gate. A pool gate. A gate in the privacy fence to the side yard. The side door of the garage. A shed, a workshop or a pump house. A dock box or boat storage locker if the lot backs up to water. A storage room under a raised house in Warrington or a detached suite in East Hill. Each of those is a way in, and each usually has a different lock, a different key, and a different level of neglect. This is the work we specialize in. Call (850) 740-4625 and we will secure the spaces around the house with hardware that is chosen for the Gulf Coast, keyed so you carry one key instead of a ring of mystery keys.
Gates are the most exposed lock on any property and they are usually the weakest. A padlock through a chain-link latch can be cut in a few seconds. An aluminum estate gate with a decorative handle often has no lock at all beyond a slide bolt on the inside. And pool gates in Pensacola subdivisions are frequently held by a self-closing latch that was never fitted with a keyed cylinder.
The right way to lock a gate is a gate box: a steel housing that is welded or bolted to the gate frame and accepts a standard deadbolt or a keyed lever. Once the box is on, the gate can take the same kind of cylinder as your front door, which means it can be keyed to the same key. We fit gate boxes to chain-link, aluminum, wrought iron and wood gates throughout Escambia County, including the older wrought iron gates you see around North Hill and the newer aluminum estate gates along Scenic Highway.
Pool barriers in Florida have to self-close and self-latch, and the latch has to sit high enough that a small child cannot reach it. We do not change that. What we do is add or replace the keyed cylinder in the latch so the gate can be locked from outside, and we make sure the closer still pulls the gate shut with the cylinder installed. If you have lost the key to a pool latch, we can rekey it in place without swapping the latch body in most cases.
Automatic driveway gates on Scenic Highway and out toward Perdido have an operator, a keypad and usually a manual release. The manual release is a keyed lock that lets you open the gate by hand when the power is out, which happens every hurricane season. We service those release cylinders, replace lost keys for them, and install a keyed override switch where there is none. We do not repair the gate motor itself; that is an operator technician. We handle the locks on it.
A shed in Pensacola typically holds a mower, a pressure washer, a generator, fishing rods, tools and sometimes a golf cart. That is a few thousand dollars of equipment behind a hasp that is screwed into thin plywood with three-quarter-inch screws. We see this constantly in Ferry Pass and Brent, where sheds went up fast after storms and were never revisited.
First we look at the door and the frame. A prefab metal shed gets a heavy-duty hasp through-bolted with carriage bolts and a backing plate so the bolts cannot be pried out. A wood-framed shed or workshop with a real door gets a keyed deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate, the same as a house. Double doors on a shed get a surface bolt on the inactive leaf so the deadbolt on the active leaf has something to lock against. If the door is warped from humidity, and many are, we plane or shim so the bolt lines up and actually throws.
Where a padlock is the right answer, we use shrouded or closed-shackle padlocks with a marine or stainless body. A shrouded padlock hides most of the shackle so bolt cutters cannot get a bite. We key them to the house key when the padlock accepts a rekeyable cylinder, which most quality padlocks do. A padlock bought off a hook at a big-box store almost never does.
The garage side door is the door everyone forgets. It is usually a hollow-core or thin steel door with a builder-grade knob and no deadbolt, and it opens into a garage that connects directly to the house. In the older ranches around Cordova Park and the split-levels in Ferry Pass it is often the least secure door on the property, and it is around the side of the house where nobody can see it.
We add a deadbolt where there is none, replace the short strike screws with three-inch screws that reach the framing, and swap the knob for a keyed lever or a passage lever depending on whether the homeowner wants it keyed. The door from the garage into the house gets the same treatment. That interior door should have a deadbolt and it should be locked at night; a garage is easy to get into through the overhead door and a locked interior door stops that from becoming a home intrusion.
Warrington, the bayou lots off Bayou Chico, and older parts of East Hill have plenty of houses raised on piers with an enclosed storage room underneath. These rooms take a keyed deadbolt on a solid door if the walls are solid, or a hasp and padlock if the enclosure is lattice or louvered. The one thing we insist on is outdoor-rated hardware, because those rooms sit in constant damp and a standard interior lock will seize within a year.
Bayou Texar and Bayou Chico are lined with private docks, and most of those docks have a dock box, a boat lift control box, a fuel locker or a storage bench. The locks on these are exposed to salt spray, direct sun and weekly rain. Plated steel fails fast in that environment. We fit stainless steel cam locks and marine brass cylinders on dock boxes, lift control boxes and waterfront storage, and we key them to a single key so the homeowner is not carrying a separate key for every box on the pier.
A lift control box protects the switch that raises and lowers the boat. Leaving it unlocked is an invitation. Most take a standard cam lock that we can replace with a stainless version and key alike. Where the box has a hasp, we handle it the same way as a shed hasp: through-bolted, stainless, shrouded padlock.
Kayak racks, golf cart sheds and outdoor lockers along the Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze side, and on the bayou lots on the mainland, take the same marine-grade approach. We are not going to promise a lock that cannot be defeated, but we can make sure yours is not the easiest one on the street.
This is the part most Pensacola homeowners actually want once they hear it exists. Instead of one key for the front door, another for the gate, a padlock key for the shed and a cam lock key for the dock box, we bring the whole property onto one key. It works like this.
We walk the lot with you and note each opening, what kind of lock is on it, whether it is rekeyable, and whether it is outdoor-rated. Most properties have fifteen to twenty-five locks when you include padlocks and cam locks, and most homeowners have never counted.
Locks with compatible cylinders are rekeyed to the new key. Locks with incompatible or worn-out cylinders are replaced with hardware that accepts the same keyway. Padlocks get swapped for rekeyable models. Cam locks get replaced with keyed-alike stainless units. At the end, one key opens all of it.
Some households want a helper, a lawn service, a tenant in the garage apartment or a boat-sitter to have access to some spaces but not the house. That is a simple master key system: the homeowner's key opens everything, and the secondary key opens only the gate and the shed, or only the detached suite. We set these up regularly for East Hill and North Hill houses with a carriage house or rear apartment.
Pensacola sits between a bay and the Gulf with humidity that stays above seventy percent most of the year. Salt air reaches well inland, especially on the bayou lots and anywhere near Pensacola Bay and the Gulf Breeze bridge. Standard plated brass hardware pits and freezes. Springs rust. Pin chambers fill with corrosion. A gate lock that worked fine in a drier climate can be stuck solid here in eighteen months.
Stainless steel for cam locks, hasps, bolts and screws. Solid marine brass for cylinders. Powder-coated or stainless gate boxes. Closed-shackle padlocks with a stainless or brass body. We avoid pot-metal knobs and levers outdoors entirely, even the ones sold as weather-resistant.
Oil-based sprays attract sand and grit and turn to gum in the heat. We lubricate outdoor cylinders with a dry PTFE or graphite product and recommend homeowners do the same twice a year. After a tropical storm, rinse the face of any outdoor lock with fresh water to get the salt off. That single habit doubles the life of a gate lock on the water.
We cover the whole city and Escambia County, but the outdoor and outbuilding work clusters in a few areas. East Hill and North Hill, with their older lots, privacy fences, carriage houses and rear apartments. Cordova Park and the bayou lots along Bayou Texar, with pool enclosures, docks and boat lifts. Warrington and the Bayou Chico shoreline, with raised houses, under-house storage and heavy boat traffic. Ferry Pass and Brent, where sheds and workshops sit behind almost every house. Scenic Highway and the estate lots toward Perdido with automatic gates. And the Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze side across the bridge, where every lock lives a few feet from salt water.
Tell us what you are trying to secure and where. We will ask a few questions about the gate, the shed or the dock so we bring the right hardware on the first trip. Most of this work is done in a single visit. If we are doing a full one-key property plan we may need two visits: one to inventory and one to install, because some replacement cylinders have to be ordered in the right keyway. We do not quote prices over the phone for outdoor work because the condition of the door, the gate frame or the hasp changes what is needed; we quote on-site before we start, and the number we quote is the number you pay.
The locks on your house matter. So do the locks on everything around it. Call (850) 740-4625 and we will handle the spaces the house forgot.
